The GESIS Fall Seminar in Computational Social Science takes place in Mannheim annually over the course of three weeks in September. Its courses are taught by both GESIS and international experts and cover methods and techniques of working with digital behavioral data (“big data”). The Fall Seminar targets advanced graduate or PhD students, post-docs, junior and senior researchers in the social sciences, data science or digital humanities who collect and analyze data from the web, social media, or digital text archives.

  • Week 1 (5-9 September) comprises courses on the foundations of working with digital behavioral data.
  • Week 2 (12-16 September) focus on the collection and management of big data.
  • Week 3 (19-23 September) cover different techniques for analyzing these data.

Lectures in each course are complemented by hands-on exercises giving participants the opportunity to apply these methods to data. Ample opportunities for networking and social events (pending on the Covid situation) complete the Fall Seminar experience. All courses are held in English.
